These designs are rooted in concepts from the canceled 2015 Nintendo 3DS Kalos sequel. That project was intended to introduce a Battle Bond form for each Kalos starter, with Greninja receiving two Battle Bond forms — one of them Ash-Greninja, distributed as a Mystery Gift — along with introducing a Mega Zygarde X and a Mega Zygarde Y.
